    1628 Ship, Vasa
    Gustaf II Adolf ordered the ornate warship to be built quickly, including a 64 bronze cannon deck that proved top heavy.  The ship foundered and sunk after traveling less than a mile, 20 minutes after launch.

    Cold, oxygen-poor water of the Baltic Sea kept the ship from deteriorating and allowed it to be raised in 1961.  Preservation took almost 30 years.
